Nestled along Mexico’s stunning Caribbean coastline, Cancun is one of the world’s most popular long-stay destinations, known for its brilliant white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and year-round tropical climate. Once a quiet fishing area, it has grown into a vibrant coastal city that still offers pockets of calm, especially along the quieter stretches of the Hotel Zone.
Today, Cancun is loved by travellers for its mix of relaxation and adventure. Spend your days strolling soft sandy beaches, exploring local markets and restaurants, or taking day trips to nearby islands, cenotes, and ancient Mayan sites throughout the Riviera Maya.
The name “Cancun” is believed to come from the Mayan language, often interpreted as “nest of snakes” or “place of the golden snake,” reflecting the region’s deep cultural and historical roots.

The Region

The Yucatan Peninsula is the southeast portion of Mexico that curves up towards Florida, creating the Gulf of Mexico. Cancun is on the Caribbean side, on the northeast end of the peninsula. This region is known world-wide for its beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise water.
The Yucatán Peninsula, is also known as the heartland of the Mayan civilization, and has a history marked by the rise and fall of powerful empires, Spanish colonization, and their struggle for independence. Indeed, the ancient ruins and local architecture and monuments tell this story.
Thus, the region offers fascinating Mayan cultural attractions such as the archaeological sites in Tulum and Chichén Itzá, fantastic snorkeling at attractions such as Isla Mujeres, and really interesting swimming experiences in unique groundwater land formations called cenotes.
